Carrie Steele earned Magna Cum Laude

Carrie Steele graduated Magna Cum Laude from The Ohio State University College of Nursing on June 10 with her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. While attending school, she worked at The Ohio State University Medical Centers James Cancer Research Hospital and at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

She is the daughter of Tom and Mary Beth Steele of Canfield and a 2008 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.

Canfield Graduate named to Dean’s List

Canfield resident Donald Allison was named to the Dean’s List at Ohio Northern University for the spring semester of 2012. Allison was a 2010 graduate of Canfield High School before he was a Pharamacy major at Ohio Northern. He is the son of proud parents Donald and Debbie Allison of Canfield.

Canfield Historical Society seeks volunteers

Volunteer opportunities are available at the Canfield Historical Society’s Bond House and Mahoning Dispatch Museum on the Green. All volunteers will be welcomed, regardless of age or expertise. All you need is an interest in history and a desire to help a local non-profit organization.

Dreams and wishes contest at the library

Come participate in a contest at the public library during regular library hours July 2-7. Match the book or movie character to the dream or wish. All correct entries will be entered in a drawing to win a prize. This contest is fun for children of all ages.

It’s ‘Just a Dream’ with the Mahoning County Green Team

Join the Mahoning County Green Team at the public library in Canfield at 10 a.m. on July 10 as they read “Just a Dream” by Chris Van Allsburg and have fun making a craft. For children preschool to third grade.

T’ween Book Club

Canfield Library is welcoming tweens to join the 5th and 6th grade book club this summer. This is your chance to meet new friends, learn about some great reads and exchange ideas on the latest books. Kick back and have a blast at 11 a.m. on July 12.

Meet Zinc the Zebra

Come to the Canfield Public Library on July 24 at 10 a.m. to meet Zinc the Zebra, who has spots instead of stripes. Zinc wants to teach kids about diversity and about the importance of being kind and sensitive to others who appear different from us. Kids will also make their own Zinc the Zebra puppet. Zinc is presented by the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and is fun for kids of all ages.

Pajama jam

Dress in your PJs and slippers and get ready to jam at the Canfield library. You will enjoy music, stories, games and fun for kids of all ages. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. on July 16.

Know your Olympians

The 2012 Olympics start July 27 so teens in grades 7-12 are invited to drop by the library to test their knowledge about this year’s Olympic athletes. This will be going on the whole month of July during regular library hours at the Canfield Public Library.

Ice cream tasting

Teens in grades 7-12 are welcome to beat the summer heat by stopping into the library to taste a variety of ice creams and vote for your favorite on July 26 at 2 p.m. We’ll post the results.

Share your favorite book

Like it? Share it. Stop by the library during regular hours for the whole month of July to fill out a book recommendation and we’ll post them up in our teen section for other teens to see all summer long. For teens in grades 7-12.

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed July 4 for Independence Day.

East High School Class of 1964 reunion set

The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18th from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. The cost is $20 per person and you must register in advance. The registration deadline ends August 6th. Passport to fishing set

This program provides fishing skills, techniques and information for beginning anglers to start fishing in their own communities. The MetroParks will host MetroMutts hike on June 30 at 10 a.m. Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ford Nature Center with your favorite canine companion as we hike the All People’s Trail and explore the center’s grounds. Family Garden Fun set

Plan a drop-in visit to the Family Garden on fair weather Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays throughout June to dig, water, pot a plant to take home or read a book.

The programs will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. The Family Garden Greeter will tell you about the plants and has free hands-on activities for children to enjoy with their favorite adults. Strawberry hide and seek

Children ages 3-5 years will discover strawberry plants hiding throughout the Family Garden on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. or June 23 from 11 a.m. to noon. The children will also decorate a pot for their special plant to grow in all summer. Snack and story will be enjoyed along with the activity. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

In The Time of Dinosaurs set

Fellows Riverside Garden will host In the Time of Dinosaurs on June 23 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. What kinds of plants are growing in the Family Garden that might have been growing in the time of the dinosaurs? Each child age 6 and up will learn about prehistoric plants and be given a ginkgo tree to take home. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The cost is $10 for residents and $14 for non-residents.

Partake in T’ai Chi

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host T’ai Chi Step One on June 20 and 27 from noon to 1 p.m. Ease stress, improve health and increase vitality. Wearing your bike helmet could get you free ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.

During June, July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.

McGuffey Historical Society hosts special guest

The William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society, based in Boardman, will host McGuffey descendant, Shirley Eckley, as a guest speaker at the society’s meeting today at 1 p.m. at the Kravitz Deli, located in the Poland library, Eckley, a retired Youngstown City Schools’ teacher and resident of Hubbard, will recite several stories, based upon the McGuffey Eclectic Readers’ themes of character, citizenship, conservation and the importance of literacy.

McGuffey is known as “America’s Schoolmaster” and was raised in the Mahoning Valley. The local McGuffey Society is the last existing chapter of the National Federation of McGuffey Societies, which once numbered 100,000 members nationwide.

Pharmacy opens Canfield location on Village Green

Pharmacy Care, a full-service pharmacy, has opened a new location on the Village Green in Canfield. Pharmacist Dan Wearsch and his staff are located at 11 East Main Street in Canfield in the former Nationwide building.

Pharmacy Care’s services include a complete specialty compounding lab, service and convenient parking.

The facility is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wound Care center relocates

The St. Elizabeth Boardman Wound Care Center has moved to 7010 South Ave., Suite 6 in Boardman. The new office, at the corner of South Avenue and Trailwood Drive, opened this morning and is convenient toRoute 224 and Interstate 680, providing easier access for patients than its former DeBartolo Place office.

St. Elizabeth Wound Care Center specializes in providing comprehensive care for chronic, non-healing wounds using the latest treatments and technologies. Treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique needs and requirements, and complements the care provided by the patient’s primary care physician.

The staff consists of physicians who specialize in the treatment of chronic wounds, nurses specially trained to care for patients with these wounds, and experienced technicians.

Area Writers Group to Meet

Canfield writers are invited to attend Monday Night Writers on June 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Cafe on Boardman-Canfield Rd. These sessions will be led by author Nancy Christie and will include various exercises and discussions on writing. There is a $10 fee per class and registration is preferred.
