The Simon Roofing Fairway Ford Canfield U-13 girls soccer team recently won the Medina Invitational Tournament. The Lady Cardinals defeated Strongsville 5-4, Buckeye (1-0), Chagrin Falls (4-1) and Medina (0-0, 4-3 in Penalty Kicks).

The championship contest was tied 0-0 after 80 minutes of regulation and overtime. Camille Holzschuh had three blocks of six shots to win the game in the goal. Bella Mangie and Taylor Meier made the first two attempts for the Cardinals. Paige Georgeoff was then blocked and Anta Mancini banged the next one in. Cheyenne Story missed just left and with the kicks tied 3-3, Giovana Condoleon nailed a penalty shot into the upper right portion of the net to end the marathon game.

“This was the best team effort we had all season. The girls played in 90 degree heat and made great efforts for the 50-50 balls,” said head coach and team manager Frank Mancini.

Mancini singled out Katie Renouf for her defensive play.

“Katie was getting used to a new position on the defensive end and played at a level that she has not shown thus far — a superb effort,” he said.

The U-13 Cardinals ended their season 22-2-2 and winners of four tournaments, including Kent State, Nike Cup, Marietta and Medina, plus a runner-up finish in Hudson.
