Boardman High School presented the 2012 Spring Jazz Concert June 1, featuring Jazz Ensembles 1, 2 and 3. Under the direction of Thomas M. Ruggieri, the Jazz Band performed in the Boardman High School cafeteria to a full audience.

Jazz Ensemble 1 started off with a tune called “The Jazz Police” by Gordon Goodwin and featured Kamron Meyers on Alto Sax and Justin Randall on trumpet. The performance featured such songs “Let’s Shout” by Jackie Wilson, “Land of Make Believe” by Chuck Mangione, and “Minuano” by Metheny/Mays.

The next set was performed by BHS Jazz Ensemble 3. The group is for students who wish to play jazz but don’t have room in their schedule, so they meet two days a week after school to rehearse.

Jazz 3 began with “Hit The Road Jack” by Percy Mayfield, arr. by Mike Lewis. They then performed “Mystic Traveler” by Michael Sweeney and ended the set with “T.J.’s Boogie” by Jeff Taylor.

Next to perform was Jazz Ensemble 2, with such songs as “Unit 7” by Sam Jones, “25 or 6 to 4” by Robert Lamm, “Baby Drives My Car” by Paul Clark and “Cissy Strut.” They closed their set with “Sidewinder” by Lee Morgan.

Jazz Ensemble 1 opened the last set with “So I Got To Grove” by Kupka/Castillo/Mathews. They then played “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square,” “Come Fly With Me” by Van Heusen/Cahn and ended with “Try a Little Tenderness.”
