Art show features top artists

Canfield High School junior Marisa DeSanto received the top award, best in show, in the Canfield Schools Student Art Show. DeSanto used oil pastels for her winning painting, titled “Restricted.”

Families, friends, students, community members and art aficionados attended the Canfield School’s Student Art Show May 23-24, which highlighted works of art from Hilltop Elementary School, C.H. Campbell Elementary School, Canfield Village Middle School and Canfield High School.
More than 1,000 pieces of art were displayed from high school art students alone. Senior art students created their own display booths and chose which pieces of art from their high school classes they wanted to showcase.
Each piece of the high school students’ art was entered into the judging. Medals were awarded to the top 60 award winners, with trophies going to the top 10 winners.
The top 10 included: best in show, Marisa DeSanto; first runner-up, Nathalie McClune; second runner-up, Rachel Mikolay; third runner-up, Dominique Favre; fourth runner-up, Marcella Sinclair; fifth runner-up, Mykell Rushton; sixth runner-up, Victoria Hume; seventh runner-up, Katie Fernstrom; eighth runner-up, Kaitlin Bucholz and ninth runner-up, Sarah Billec.
Judging the art show was Dr. David Gill, art education professor in the Department of Art at Youngstown State University.
Best in show winner DeSanto, a junior, used oil pastels for her winning painting, titled “Restricted,” and explained her piece was a self portrait.
“It was our persona project for advanced art class. We were to show the person we see ourselves as,” DeSanto said.
DeSanto’s original pastel painting is on display in New York where it will hang for the next three years. Her piece has been selected as an American Vision Gold Medalist in the 2012 National Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. The American Vision Gold Medal is a National Best of Show for the Scholastic competition.
DeSanto, along with her piece, were honored June 1 at Carnegie Hall.
First-runner up McClune, a senior, used oil on canvas to create her piece, “Wandering.” She will attend Ohio University in the fall to study graphic design. She received a portfolio scholarship from the university.
“I really didn’t show much interest in art until about eighth grade into my freshman year. Now I create in several different mediums like acrylic, digital and textiles and crochet,” McClune said.
The art students used several mediums to create their pieces, including computer graphics, 3-D sculptures, digital imaging, movies, pencil drawings and oil on canvas.
