Police: W. Pa. man blamed dog for apartment arson
LILLY, Pa.
A western Pennsylvania man who blamed his dog for causing an apartment fire has been jailed on charges that he set the blaze himself.
The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown reported Wednesday that Cresson Township police have charged 58-year-old John Saparo with setting the July 12 fire, though police have yet to specify how.
What police did say is that they’ve determined the fire didn’t start the way Saparo claimed. He reportedly told officers he was cleaning and had several fans running when his dog knocked over one of the fans, which, somehow, started the fire.
Saparo remains in the Cambria County Jail awaiting a preliminary hearing next Wednesday on arson and related charges. Online court records don’t list an attorney for him.
Woman arrested for visiting man through suitcase
PORTLAND, Ore.
Police say a 50-year-old Oregon woman is in trouble because of her relationship baggage — but it’s not the emotional kind.
Kola J. McGrath was arrested last week for trespassing after workers at her boyfriend’s downtown Portland apartment complex discovered the man was sneaking her into the building by hiding her in a large, rolling suitcase. She was banned from the building last year for breaking a fire-extinguisher case during an argument.
The Oregonian reports McGrath is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 96 pounds.
Police were notified when a caller reported a man had kidnapped a woman, placed her in a pink suitcase and taken her to the apartment building.
Officers then searched 52-year-old Curtis T. Lowe’s apartment and found McGrath hiding in a closet.
Prosthetic leg lost at sea, returned to owner
LEXINGTON, Ky.
A fisherman was surprised when he hauled up a prosthetic leg from the Gulf of Mexico, and even more surprised when he was able to find its owner.
The leg is emblazoned with the logo from the University of Kentucky and the school’s wildcat mascot. Fisherman Matt Willingham says he contacted the manufacturer about finding the leg’s owner.
WKYT-TV in Lexington reports that it belonged to Fred Robinson, who played on the school’s football team in the 1980s and had lost his leg in a work accident five years ago.
Robinson says he was shocked to find out someone found his $30,000 prosthetic leg.
Robinson, who lives in Florida, says he lost the prosthetic while swimming over the Memorial Day weekend.
