1842: Queen Victoria becomes the first British monarch to ride on a train, traveling from Slough Railway Station to Paddington in 25 minutes.

1942: The first of two four-man Nazi sabotage teams arrives in the United States during World War II. The first group disembarkes from a U-boat off Long Island, N.Y.; the second one arrives several days later on the Florida coast. (The eight are arrested after one of them goes to U.S. authorities; six of the saboteurs are executed.)

1966: The Supreme Court rules in Miranda v. Arizona that criminal suspects have to be informed of their constitutional right to consult with an attorney and to remain silent.

1987: Two young brothers, Marvin Letson, 6, and William Letson, 4, die in a fire that swept through the family home at 1393 Holland Ave. on Youngstown’s East Side.

State Rep. Robert F. Hagan of Youngstown is calling for an Ohio House investigation into allegations that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Ohio misrepresented their 1985 earnings in an effort to win passage of legislation they supported.

1972: Five young boys have admitted setting fires at two Youngstown schools because they were angry with teachers.

Two armed men rob the Union National Bank’s Uptown Branch on Market Street, escaping with $20,000.

1962: The 100-member Army Field Band thrills more than 3,000 people in a concert at Idora Park, despite chilly weather and threats of rain.

Advertisement: The Corvair Monza “made of steel from the Mahoning, Trumbull and Shenango Valleys” on sale at State Chevrolet, Wick Ave., Youngstown, $2,297, with Powerglide transmission, push-button radio, heater, whitewall tires and wheel covers.

1937: In a front-page editorial, The Vindicator calls on steel companies to sign a contract with the Steel Workers Organizing Committee, bringing an end to a strike that has crippled the area’s mills owned by Republic Steel Corp. and the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co.
