Police probe series of assaults
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are investigating a series of felonious assaults between Monday and Tuesday, several involving firearms.
Police have determined the beating and shooting early Tuesday that sent two Campbell men — one 25, the other 41 — to St. Elizabeth Health Center was over a purported debt owed to a 25-year-old city man.
That man is listed as a suspect but has not been arrested or charged.
According to police, the two Campbell men went to an East Chalmers address to visit a friend just after 2 a.m. when the 25-year-old suspect began beating one of the men over a purported $1,400 debt. The other man attempted to intervene, and gunshots were fired.
The man who tried to stop the beating was shot in the shoulder and right side. Police said his wounds are nonlife-threatening.
The two Campbell men tried to drive away from the scene then flagged down a passing Youngstown police officer.
A 37-year-old Youngstown woman told police her East Avondale Avenue home was shot up multiple times early Tuesday.
The woman said she was lying in a bedroom just after midnight when she heard a volley of gunshots and bullets hitting her home. The woman said she went to inspect the house and found multiple small bullet holes in the front door. She told police she has no idea who would want to shoot at the house.
A 73-year-old South Side man told police he was robbed at gunpoint as he sat in his Southern Boulevard home Monday afternoon.
The man told police he was inside the home when two men, who appeared to be about 18 and wearing all black, came into the house through an unlocked door and demanded money. One of the intruders pulled out a small, black handgun and pointed it at the man.
The man told the intruders he did not have any money. One of the men went through the elderly victim’s pockets looking for money but did not find anything. The two men grabbed a cellphone and some prescription drugs before running out of the house.
Several city residents were robbed at gunpoint late Monday in the 2900 block of McGuffey Road after offering a 24-year-old man a ride from a discount store. Police charged Brian Angel, 24, with aggravated robbery.
The group of four, ranging in age from 15 to 38, told police they stopped at the discount store just before midnight looking to buy toilet tissue.
They noticed the store was closed and Angel, whom they know as “B Head,” was standing in the parking lot. Angel asked for a ride, and the driver agreed.
The victims told police Angel, after getting in the car, pulled out a handgun and demanded the valuables of everyone in the vehicle. Angel also reportedly grabbed the keys from the ignition.
The victims handed Angel $150 and a cellphone before he ran off and entered a house on McGuffey Road near Jacobs Road. Police found Angel hiding inside the McGuffey house.
