HUBBARD

A fire that severely damaged a Hubbard Township home Monday night was caused by extension cords overheating from a window air-conditioning unit, said Chief Ron Spanish.

Hubbard and Liberty firefighters responded to the blaze at 3615 Woodbine Ave. after a neighbor called 911 for help.

Firefighters were on the scene by 6:30 p.m. and extinguished the fire around 8 p.m. Officials said the fire started in the bedroom while the homeowner was across the street.

Derby dinner

The 41 area youngsters who competed in last weekend’s Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby will be honored at the annual awards dinner at 7 p.m. today at the Jackson Township Administration Building, 10613 Mahoning Ave.

This year’s three local champions, Eythan Evans from Niles (stock division), Brandon Krohn from Austintown (super stock division) and Melody Rose Castner from Hubbard (masters division) will be honored with special awards and will go on to represent the Greater Youngstown area in 75th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron on July 21.

Beaver Local school board will meet in special session at 5:30 p.m. today in room 2 of the high school, 13187 state Route 7, to consider personnel matters.

Lottery winner

Joseph M. Serensky of Diamond won $100,000 after matching all five numbers in last Friday’s Rolling Cash 5 drawing.

After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent are withheld, Serensky receives $69,000.

Serensky purchased the five-of-five Rolling Cash 5 ticket at BP, 890 Canfield-Niles Road. Serensky picked the winning numbers of 11-14-18-19-22. BP receives a $500 agent selling bonus.

Homicide charges

sharon, pa.

A man who is facing a criminal homicide charge in the stabbing death of a Sharon, Pa., woman was jailed in lieu of $1 million bond after an arraignment Tuesday.

Anthony S. Argenziano, 19, of Pitt Street in Sharon appeared before District Magistrate Dennis Songer in Sharon. He was taken to Sharon from Youngstown, where police found him Saturday evening trying to catch a Greyhound bus to New York City.

Tracey Goga, 42, was found dead Saturday afternoon by her father in her apartment on East State Street. She had been stabbed between 30 and 35 times. Police believe she was killed early Thursday.

Sharon Police Chief Mike Menster described Argenziano as an aquaintance who was frequently at Goga’s apartment.

Argenziano’s preliminary hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. June 22 before Magistrate Songer.
