Pittsburgh man goes to prison for Father's Day shooting in 2011
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh man will spend 21 to 42 years in prison for killing one man and wounding a woman when he fired a gun into a crowd of people at a Father’s Day picnic last year.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that 21-year-old Rayshawn Edwards continued to protest his innocence even as he was sentenced today by Judge Anthony Mariani of Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.
But the judge said in sentencing Edwards, “I don’t accept your denial. I don’t think a mistake was made here.”
The judge convicted Edwards of third-degree homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment after a three-day nonjury trial in March.
Prosecutors say 27-year-old Christopher Jones died and 49-year-old Christina Matthews was wounded — and needed a hip replacement — after being shot by Edwards.
