Someplace Safe Inc. on Tod Avenue Northwest has acquired a new, eight-passenger van, thanks to a 75 percent grant from the Ohio Attorney General’s office and matching money from local donors. Someplace Safe Inc. is the only domestic-violence agency in Trumbull County. Someplace Safe Inc. provides a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week hot line as well as emergency shelter to victims of domestic violence and their dependent children. The van will enable the organization to provide rides for a variety of appointments.
Senior-center day

The War of 1812
YOUNGSTOWN
Ohio’s role in the War of 1812 and its impact on the Mahoning Valley will be the topic of a program in conjunction with the bicentennial of that war at 6:30 p.m. June 19 at the main public library, 305 Wick Ave. The presenter will be Tim Seman, genealogy and local history librarian. Laying of the Roses
AUSTINTOWN
Korean War Veterans Chapter 137 will conduct a “Laying of the Roses Ceremony” at 12:30 p.m. June 24 at the Korean War Memorial in Wickliffe Circle Park off Mahoning Avenue. Military personnel and the general public are invited to the ceremony to honor the 122 service members from Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties who were killed in action. Retired Army Lt. Col. Walter Duzzny is the main speaker. Members of Tri-State Marine Corps League Detachment 494 will place a rose for John D. Kelly, a local Marine who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his heroic action May 28, 1952, against Communist forces in Korea. Kelly was born July 8, 1928, in Youngstown, and soon afterward his family moved to Homestead, Pa. Also, a wreath will be laid by retired Army Lt. Col. Rod Hosler, who served in the 19th Support Brigade Group in Korea, and Leo Connelly Jr., who served in Vietnam in from 1966 to 1968.
