Pyatt Market fire

Youngstown firefighters responded to a fire at the former Pyatt Street Market shortly after midnight Saturday. After extinguishing the light smoke, fire crews left the scene at 12:45 a.m. Then about 4 a.m., they were called back and found the structure fully involved.

Firefighters remained on location late Saturday morning. Though no one was injured, an area of the business was currently being rented out. The cause is still under investigation.

Men’s conference

YOUNGSTOWN

The Men’s Health Awareness and Workforce Conference will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave.

Sponsors are NEO HealthForce, the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition and Youngstown Office on Minority Health.

The free conference will offer men age 16 and older information about employment demands in the manufacturing and health industries, men’s health and social/economical factors facing men.

Walnut St. closure

North Walnut Street between Carlton Avenue and Court Street will close for 30 days beginning Tuesday for a project to replace sewers and waterlines. North Walnut will be open between Rayen Avenue and Cassese’s MVR at 410 N. Walnut St. Access to the restaurant will remain during construction.

Election rally

YOUNGSTOWN

Simply United Together will host a rally next Sunday for the re-election of President Barack Obama.

At noon, the group will be at Christ Centered Church, 3300 Hudson Ave. A gathering from 4 to 6 p.m. will be in the parking lot at the former Mr. Paul’s Bakery, Glenwood Avenue, with Spoken Word, Harambee Youth Dancers, a disc jockey and step- dancing show.

Voter registration will take place at both sites. Participating is 1911 United, composed of members of predominantly black fraternities Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi that are doing a 25-city tour for voter registration and education.
