The Right Rev. Emmitt L. Nevels Sr., prelate of the Ohio West Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of America’s fifth largest religious denomination, Church of God in Christ, announced the convocation will be Tuesday through Friday in the city. The convocation will feature Pastor Marvin Winans, pastor of the 4,500-member Perfecting Church in Detroit. In February, he gave singer Whitney Houston’s eulogy.
Ohio West will sponsor a concert June 15 at Stambaugh Auditorium with Israel Houghton and New Breed.
Bishop Nevels, founder and pastor of the Nevels Temple Church of God in Christ, 939 Elm St., was elevated to the office of jurisdictional bishop in C.O.G.I.C. in November 2011. Youngstown is the Episcopal headquarters of Ohio West Jurisdiction with churches in nearly half of Ohio’s 88 counties.
Music at cathedral

A special evening of music in honor of the patron saint will be presented at 6 p.m. Sunday in St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St. The annual feast day concert will feature original and traditional Celtic music by Cead Mile Failte directed by Paul Kirk.
The concert is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the cathedral hall.
Labyrinth walk

Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will sponsor a guided labyrinth walk from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 20 at Villa Maria Community Center.
The theme is “Path of Compassion.”
The labyrinth is a tool for enriching the spiritual journey. Labyrinths have been around for more than 4,000 years and are found in every major religious tradition in the world. Labyrinths are geometric forms that define a sacred space. Sister Therese Pavilonis will offer a brief history before the walk.

Twenty-two members of St. John Academy of Theological Studies received certificates of participation from the Rev. D. Gary Schreckengost, pastor of the Historic Lutheran Church of St. John, 1429 Mahoning Ave.
The topic of the winter/spring term of the ecumenical study group was “Understanding the Great Doctrines of the Church.”
A luncheon and bagpipe demonstration by Katie Helms of Knoxville, Tenn., followed the presentation.
Groening lecture

“Help and Healing on the Spiritual Path Through the Teachings of Bruno Groening” will be presented at 5 p.m. June 19 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 S. Broad St. The session is taking place at, but is not affiliated with, the church.
The free, 90-minute lecture, sponsored by Bruno Groening Circle of Friends, is based on teachings of the German healer and teacher.

Diocesan Infant Jesus of Prague Guild will mark its 65th anniversary with a Mass and luncheon June 20.
The rosary will be at 9:30 a.m., and Mass will be at 10 at Infant Jesus of Prague Church, 7754 South Ave. Ext. After Mass, members will meet at Holiday Inn banquet hall for a luncheon.
Evening of peace

Catholic Charities, the Diocese of Youngstown and Catholic Charities Regional Agency will sponsor “An Evening of Peace and Reflection” on June 21 at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 3020 Reeves Road NE.
Evening prayer will begin at 6 p.m. Nancy Voitus, executive director of Catholic Charities Regional Agency, will give the keynote address on “Managing Stress: Learning to Live with Less.”
Participants will have the option of participating in relaxation opportunities — viewing an inspirational video, partaking in conversation and refreshments with others, enjoying a brief chair massage or praying/meditating in Blessed Sacrament’s chapel.

Honorable Bishop Charles H. Ellis III, presiding prelate of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc., will speak at the 6 p.m. service Sunday at Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church, 1812 Oak Hill Ave., where Suffragan Bishop C. Shawn Tyson is pastor.
Bishop Ellis is the 10th presiding (bishop) prelate, which is the highest ranking officer in the organization. He serves as senior pastor of the nearly 8,000-member Greater Grace Temple in Detroit.
Appreciation event

Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., will host an appreciation program for the musical department at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Speaker will be the Rev. Ernest Ellis, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church. The theme is “giving thanks always for all things unto the God the Father in the name of Lord Jesus Christ” from Ephesians 5:20.
The free event is open to all.
3 churches merging

The Diocese of Youngs-town Parish Reconfiguration Plan, which began in 2008 and was promulgated by Bishop George V. Murry in May 2010, includes parishes that remain as single parishes, collaborative units and merged units.
On May 31, three churches merged with the new name Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. They are St. Matthias, Holy Name of Jesus and Sts. Cyril and Methodius. All three worship sites remain open. The mailing address is 915 Cornell St., Youngstown, OH 44502.
Other parishes affected by mergers or collaboration will continue to work together until the reconfiguration plan is complete.
Prayer initiative

Shenango Valley for Christ, a prayer initiative, will meet at 9:30 a.m. June 19 at Living Word Church, 1109 E. State St., where they will divide into groups and pray.
The groups will visit “pressure points” of government, education, business, media and spiritual centers.
