Beaver preserve programs to begin

The Beaver Township Park Board will launch its 2012 programming at the Nature Preserve next Saturday with “Birds of Flight.”

The program will provide a closer look at various types of wild birds. Each year, the township offers free monthly educational programs at the Beaver Township Nature Preserve on State Route 165, near New Buffalo Road.

All programs begin at 3 p.m. Those attending are encouraged to dress appropriately and wear comfortable shoes or hiking boots.

Other programs scheduled this year are:

July 14: Bob Neapolitan from Nature’s Wonders will discuss heritage and pesticide-free plants.

Aug. 11: Eric Barrett from Ohio State University Extension will discuss insects and how they affect our trees during “Pests of Urban and Woodland Trees.”

Sept. 29: Autumn Fest, featuring hayrides, petting zoo, refreshments, educational programs.

Oct. 6: Mushroom expert Walter Sturgeon will discuss and lead a hike in search of mushrooms.

Beaver Township nature Preserve features 80 acres of nature trails, a foot bridge, picnic areas and many types of natural wildlife. Guided tours are available by calling the park board office at 330-549-9552.
