Union Elementary School students gained a wealth of knowledge in entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work preparation during the school’s “J.A. In a Day” event May 24.
Volunteers from the Junior Achievement program, which is a worldwide non-profit organization that provides economic education for students K-12 visited each class and taught lessons to students.
“I feel it’s very beneficial and students are learning skills that they’ll use forever,” said Union Teacher Gina Chiaro.
Junior Achievement volunteers include people from the community that have an array of backgrounds.
“The span of our volunteers is very broad. We have college students, parents, retired teachers etc.,” said Junior Achievement of Mahoning Program Manager Nicole Widomski.
Some of the volunteers who taught students included Poland Mayor Tim Sicafuse, Shepherd of the Valley employee Trish Ahlswede and many more.
Volunteers provided games and activities that ranged from coin recognition to discussions about the value of newspapers to the function of a city.
“Junior Achievement programs are very hand-on,” Widomski said.
