Candidate violated law

COLUMBUS

The Ohio Inspector General has found that Gideon A. Fetterolf Jr. committed wrongdoing while working as a liquor-control agent for the Ohio Department of Commerce and running as a write-in candidate for mayor of Newton Falls.

An investigation indicated that Fetterolf violated state employee work policies and state laws, the state said. Fetterolf has since retired from his state employment.

The matter has been referred to the Ohio Elections Commission, the Ohio Ethics Commission and the Trumbull County prosecutor for consideration, according to the Ohio Inspector General, who conducted the investigation in response to a complaint.

The agency concluded that Fetterolf solicited for a campaign contribution on work time and falsely reported where one of his contributions came from. Fetterolf was unsuccessful in his bid to become mayor.
