St. Christine’s School fourth-grade student Sydni Armstrong received a special surprise from the State Fire Marshall’s office May 25, after winning first place in the Fire Safety Poster contest.
“I was excited and a little nervous,” she admitted.
According to Tim Royer, Fire Safety Educator for the State office, Armstrong’s drawing was chosen out of hundreds of applications around the state.
Drawing is something Armstrong enjoys doing.
“She loves to draw and loves art,” said Armstrong’s father, Jim.
Armstrong’s parents, Jim and Donna, knew their daughter had won the contest for two weeks, but tried their best to surprise her.
“We had a hard time keeping a secret for two weeks,” Jim said.
Armstrong’s classmates, parents and teacher watched as Royer awarded her with a ribbon, tickets to the Ohio State Fair and a bag full of fire safety items.
She learned a great deal about fire prevention as well.
“I learned that you should always blow out candles before you go to bed,” she said.
