Leetonia library plans presentation

LEETONIA

Bill Chavanne, an alumnus of the Ohio Veterans Children’s Home, will speak about the home at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Leetonia Library, at 181 Walnut St.

The institution, in Xenia, Ohio, is featured in the book “A Home of Their Own: The Story of Ohio’s Greatest Orphanage” by Edward Lentz.

Formerly known as the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home, the orphanage was created in the 1870s and included 500 acres that housed, educated, clothed, fed and raised many young children.

Chavanne will share his memories and discuss the relevancy of orphanages today, contrasting them to the current foster care system. Call 330-427-6635 for information.
