Both Union and Dobbins Elementary School students rode to school in a fire truck after winning first place in the Fire Safety Poster Contest.
Dobbins Elementary School student Chase Wern and Union Elementary school student Giana Mcarthur drew posters that were chosen by the firefighters.
“Every fall the Ohio State Fire Fighter Department holds a fire prevention contest and the firefighters pick the winners,” said Bill O’Hara, Western Reserve Fire Prevention officer.
Wern, who was also a winner in 2010, smiled from ear to ear as he rode to school in the fire truck May 25.
“It’s the most special way to come to school,” said Chase’s mother, Melissa.
Mcarthur was also excited to ride to school in the fire truck May 23 where she was greeted by her classmates and family.
“She was waiting at the end of her driveway,” O’Hara said.
Both winners also received a bag full of fire safety tools and a first-place ribbon.
The contest not only gives students the chance to ride in a fire truck, but also increases awareness of the importance of fire prevention to the community.
“It’s just a fantastic feeling and it’s making the general public more aware of fire prevention,” O’Hara said.
