Austintown parents hosting press conference Tuesday
The Austintown Parents for the Safe Transportation of Students Committee will hold a press conference June 12 at St. Christine’s School to address the busing of non-public school students.
According to the group, the leadership of the Austintown Local Schools has made the decision to transfer to the Western Reserve Transit Authority its obligation to provide safe, comparable and timely transportation of non-public school students who reside in the Austintown School District.
A number of political and business leaders of the community have committed to attending this event. Also, Catholic school parents from Austintown will be joined by parents of Molly Kessler School and Youngstown Christian School students.
East High School Class of 1964 reunion set
The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18th from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. The cost is $20 per person and you must register in advance. The registration deadline ends August 6th. Business women to meet June 12
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will hold its June 12 meeting at the Blue Wolf Catering on Lockwood Blvd., in Boardman.
The dinner will be stuffed chicken, house salad, penne pasta with meatballs, green beans and dessert. The cost is $15.50.

Tri-Gold women to award scholarships
The Tri-Gold Chapter of The America Business Women’s Association will meet June 13 at A La Carte Catering, 429 Lisbon St., Canfield. A social at 5:50 will proceed the dinner meeting at 6 p.m. Cost is $15 and will include chicken, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, tossed salad, rolls and butter, tea or coffee and lemon delight desert.

Play strawberry hide and seek
Children ages 3-5 years will discover strawberry plants hiding throughout the Family Garden on June 21 from 1 to 2 p.m. or June 23 from 11 a.m. to noon. In The Time of Dinosaurs set
Fellows Riverside Garden will host In the Time of Dinosaurs on June 23 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. What kinds of plants are growing in the Family Garden that might have been growing in the time of the dinosaurs? Family Garden Fun set
Plan a drop-in visit to the Family Garden on fair weather Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays throughout June to dig, water, pot a plant to take home or read a book.
The programs will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. The Family Garden Greeter will tell you about the plants and has free hands-on activities for children to enjoy with their favorite adults.

Austintown business CFO speaks at national conference
Keith Campanelli, chief financial officer and Practice Manager for Austintown Pediatrics, Inc., a local pediatric office, was a featured panelist at the recent HIMSS conference’s Summit for Health Information and Financial Technology held in Las Vegas Feb. 21–24.

McGuffey Historical Society hosts special guest
The William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society, based in Boardman, will host McGuffey descendant, Shirley Eckley, as a guest speaker at the society’s meeting today at 1 p.m. at the Kravitz Deli, located in the Poland library, Eckley, a retired Youngstown City Schools’ teacher and resident of Hubbard, will recite several stories, based upon the McGuffey Eclectic Readers’ themes of character, citizenship, conservation and the importance of literacy.
McGuffey is known as “America’s Schoolmaster” and was raised in the Mahoning Valley. The local McGuffey Society is the last existing chapter of the National Federation of McGuffey Societies, which once numbered 100,000 members nationwide.

Play Kinect at the library
The Austintown library will host the Kinect Olympics on June 25 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Kindergartners through sixth-graders will split into two teams, USA Red versus USA Blue, and battle through different sporting events in Kinect Sports seasons one and two. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or have never tried the Kinect, you’ll be entertained by the larger-than-life graphics and friendly, competitive atmosphere. Come with a good attitude and leave with a new appreciation of all that your library has to offer.

The Austintown library invites school-age children to gather around the campfire for songs, stories and crafts on June 27 at 11 a.m.
Wearing your bike helmet could get you free ice cream
The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.
During June, July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.
Library to close
The Austintown library, 600 S. Raccoon Road will close temporarily until mid-June so that the flooring can be replaced.
The library will extend due dates on items checked out at Austintown library that would have been due back during this closed period. Extended use fees for items checked out at Austintown library will not accrue during the days the branch is closed.
Book drops outside the Austintown library will be available while the branch is closed. Materials can be checked out and/or returned at any of the other public libraries in Mahoning County.
Bereaved Parents meeting set
The Mahoning County Chapter of Bereaved Parents of the USA meet the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Park Vista of Youngstown, 1216 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. The parents meet to honor and remember their children who have passed away.

Wickliffe block watch hosts garage sale
The Austintown Wickliffe Block Watch is accepting clean and usable donations for its garage sale Aug. 28-29. All proceeds from the sale will go toward the group’s annual block party which is open to all Austintown residents. The St. Elizabeth Boardman Wound Care Center has moved to 7010 South Ave., Suite 6 in Boardman. The new office, at the corner of South Avenue and Trailwood Drive, opened this morning and is convenient to Route 224 and Interstate 680, providing easier access for patients than its former DeBartolo Place office.
St. Elizabeth Wound Care Center specializes in providing comprehensive care for chronic, non-healing wounds using the latest treatments and technologies.

Car Trunk and Treasure Sale set
The Ursuline Center Car Trunk and Treasure Sale will be July 14 at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of the Ursuline Center on Shields Road in Canfield. Spaces are now available for cars.
The cost for a side-by-side space is $25, but the fee will increase to $30 after June 30. All spaces are first-come, first-served.
The sale will also include food and refreshments on sale as well as a book, bake and furniture sale that be will held inside the center. The sale of pets, firearms and fireworks will not be permitted.
