No special election in Trumbull Co.

WARREN

There will be no special election Aug. 7 in Trumbull County now that the Village of Newton Falls has withdrawn its request for a police levy and a charter issue.

Jack Haney, Newton Falls village manager, said the issues will appear on the November ballot instead.

They were withdrawn because the Ohio Secretary of State’s office said there were language issues that needed to be resolved on the ballot issues.

The 3.5-mill, five-year additional tax levy for police services would have raised $210,167 a year. The village also had proposed a charter issue that would have expanded the park and recreation board from two members to five.

Tires to be removed

WARREN

At times, it’s not just a home in Trumbull County that needs to be removed to eliminate blight. Sometimes it’s the objects that have been dumped on the property.

There is such a case in Warren Township.

On Wednesday, the Trumbull County commissioners authorized Wholesale Tire Company of Warren to remove about 800 tires from one of the properties currently undergoing a housing demolition.

Julie Green, county grants coordinator, said the contract will pay $2,500.

The demolition and tire removal are being done with funding from the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Theft charges

new castle, pa.

Neshannock Township Police issued two warrants on felony theft charges. Police charged Brian Grebenz, 38, of Boardman, and Jonalyn Ihlenfeld, 37, of New Castle.

Police said they stole jewelry May 15 from a Meadow View Boulevard woman, whom they knew. Police said Ihlenfeld turned herself in, was arraigned and released on bond. Grebenz still is wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Fire extinguished

WARREN

The Rev. Christopher Henyk, pastor of St. Pius X Parish on Moncrest Drive Northwest, extinguished an apparent arson at the church at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

A woman reported that she had gone to the church to take pictures of the convent that was scheduled for demolition and noticed a man in a red, hooded sweat shirt running out of the convent and a fire burning inside.

She alerted the pastor, who put out the fire.

The suspect lit several phone books and several pieces of wood trim, police said.

Church officials also determined that someone had gotten into the church and the school portion of the building and sprayed three fire extinguishers in the bathrooms and hallway, covering the area with fire-extinguisher dust, police said.
