Police probe South Side shooting
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Police continue to look for leads to find whoever is responsible for shooting and wounding a female on the South Side during a fight.
Officers responded to a call about a large fight at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the corner of East Avondale and South avenues, but before they could make it to the scene, the woman, 44, of East Avondale, was shot in the left hand and left leg.
Officers cleared the area and had the woman taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police were to continue their investigation today into the shooting. No arrests had been made as of press time Tuesday night.
This was the second large fight city police have investigated this year on the South Side.
An extensive police investigation into a March 17 fight on the grounds of Taft Elementary School, a few blocks from the shooting scene, resulted in multiple arrests.
Police charged five juveniles and one adult in that fight, which took place at the elementary school on a Sunday afternoon when school was not in session. Several people involved in the fight recorded the action and uploaded video of the fight to the Internet.
The video shows a shirtless teen in black shorts engaged in a fight with another teen. Multiple people stood around and watched the fight unfold, with several people recording the action.
The video shows chaos eventually breaking out with multiple fights taking place at the same time.
Police said the fight was not a staged event as seen on other Internet videos of local teens fighting. It was fallout between two groups of kids who had a prior altercation over use of a basketball court.
Police also have been told the two factions of kids fighting in the video had an ongoing feud before the issue at the basketball court and the fight at Taft.
