Firefighters have estimated damage to the former Scacchetti’s Restaurant on Mahoning Avenue at Four Mile Run Road at about $65,000 in property and $10,000 in contents, or a total loss.

A call about the blaze at 3781 Mahoning Ave. came in about 10:50 a.m. Monday, and the last firefighters left the scene about 2:30 p.m.

A cause has yet to be determined and a follow-up report from an arson investigator is under way.

The 2,593-square-foot structure was built in 1925. Scacchetti’s moved to Boardman about six years ago and closed a couple of years later.

Man sought, had tried to steal clubs

Police are trying to find the man who attempted to steal three golf clubs from Dick’s Sporting Goods store on U.S. Route 224.

The incident occurred about noon Monday when a man, who police said is also a suspect in an April Best Buy theft, took three golf clubs, valued at about $1,100 total, from the store without paying and setting off alarm sensors.

Three staff members chased the man through the parking lot. He dropped the clubs in an open field behind First Place Bank, near the sporting-goods store, according to reports.

The suspect is described as a white male between 6 feet 1 inch and 6 feet 3 inches tall, about 170 pounds.

He was wearing blue jeans and a dark blue hooded sweat shirt. He also has a beard and dark-brown hair, reports stated.

Handel’s will sell mini Molnar’s rolls

Beginning today, customers at Handel’s Ice Cream shops will be able to buy Molnar’s mini cinnamon rolls. Molnar’s cinnamon rolls are known from concession stands at the Canfield Fair.

The cinnamon rolls can be purchased as a six-pack or served in a cinnamon-roll sundae, which includes two cinnamon rolls and a scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with a secret cinnamon sauce.

Police investigate shooting of boy, 16

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are trying to determine how a 16-year-old boy was shot while walking on the East Side.

According to police reports, the boy was walking in the area of McGuffey Road and Stiles Avenue about 7:23 p.m. Monday when he heard a series of five shots and felt a burning sensation in his left hip.

The boy flagged down a passing motorist for a ride to the hospital. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was interviewed by police.

Fumes close building

The city building was closed Tuesday because of fumes, but the fumes were not from a gas leak, the fire department said.

The building closed about 11:30 a.m. A mechanic was in the garage at the police department replacing a rear axle on a cruiser when oil fumes got into the building, the fire department said.

The fumes were not dangerous.

The building was expected to reopen today.
