A voter-registration drive by supporters of President Barack Obama is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at 960 Fifth St. here. Those who aren’t registered to vote can drive to the location, stay in their vehicles and volunteers will provide registration forms, clip boards and pens. All the forms will be delivered the next day to the Mahoning County Board of Elections, according to an event organizer.

Theft suspect ID’d

A Vindicator reader helped township police identify a theft suspect.

Rodney Dodson, 50, of Youngstown, was arrested Monday and is expected to be arraigned on a theft charge this week in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman. Police said Dodson is accused of stealing more than $300 worth of cigarettes from the Shell gas station at 950 Boardman-Poland Road about 10:20 p.m. May 4.

A still of security footage of the suspect appeared in the May 16 Vindicator, and police said a reader recognized the man and gave them information leading to the arrest.

Fire rekindles

YOUNGSTOWN

Firefighters were called back to the RRI tire recycling plant on Brittain Avenue off Poland Avenue on Monday morning.

The fire was a rekindling of an earlier fire that occurred Wednesday night and which investigators ruled arson. Investigators have said they do not think the RRI fire was related to the string of arsons at vacant houses on the city’s South Side that began overnight last Wednesday into Thursday morning. The cause of the original fire is under investigation.

Poker run organized

Berlin Center

The eighth annual Noah’s Lost Ark Exotic Animal Sanctuary charity poker run is scheduled for Saturday.

The run begins at the Downtown Cafe & Patio in Hubbard and ends at Ben’s Restaurant in Berlin Center, with a stop at the sanctuary on the way.

Registration is from 10 a.m. to noon and costs $15 per rider and $10 per passenger. All vehicles are welcome. The sanctuary rescues abused and neglected animals from across the U.S. and is funded solely by donations. A raffle and auction also are planned.

Troopers find 103 pounds of marijuana

LEWISBURG

Four suspects, including two from New Castle, are facing felony drug charges after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers seized 103 pounds of suspected marijuana worth an estimated $128,750 after a traffic stop in Preble County, according to a news release.

Troopers stopped a 2011 Buick Enclave on Friday for a lane-change violation on Interstate 70 eastbound and noticed a marijuana odor and other indicators to determine probable cause for a search, troopers said.

The driver, Michael E. Robinson, 39, of New Castle, and passengers: Carl Perkins, 36, also of New Castle.; Estaban R. Sanchez, 28, and Heleman Telles, 35, both of Las Cruces, N.M., were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of criminal tools. All four were taken to Preble County Jail.

Road repairs under way in Canfield, Beaver

CANFIELD

State Route 46 between U.S. Route 224 and U.S. Route 62/Shields Road will remain closed through Thursday. Until Friday, the state Route 164 bridge in Beaver Township over Interstate 680 between West Western Reserve Road and state Route 626 will have various lane restrictions daily between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. for bridge repairs.
