Transit of Venus
Transit of Venus
CANFIELD
Early this evening will be the last chance of your lifetime to see a celestial phenomenon known as the Transit of Venus.
The passage of the planet Venus across the face of the sun begins at 6 p.m. today, and public sessions for safe viewing of the event are scheduled at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm in Canfield and outside the Ted Pedas Planetarium at Farrell High School in Farrelll, Pa.
The local view of the 6-hour and 40-minute passage will be cut off at sundown and is contingent on the sun’s not being obscured by clouds. Venus will appear as a tiny dot crossing the sun as it passes directly between the Earth and the sun. The next Transit of Venus will take place in 2117.
Youngstown State University’s Ward-Beecher Planetarium staff and members of the Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society will have filtered telescopes set up at the Canfield location.
Road closings
Youngstown
Benita Avenue will be closed between Cordova and Ohio avenues today for waterline and sanitary sewer work.
Farmers markets
WARREN
A series of farmers markets is scheduled at the St. Joseph Minor Emergency, 1296 Tod Place, N.W., from June through October. The first event is from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The site was selected because the west side of Warren is considered a food desert, a place where residents don’t have access to fresh produce, by the United States Department of Agriculture.
The Lake-to-River Food Cooperative, in partnership with Humility of Mary Health Partners, is offering fresh-produce markets to its employees and nearby neighbors. The farmers markets at St. Joseph’s Minor Emergency are from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month, except holidays. The dates are Wednesday, July 11, Aug. 1, Sept. 5 and Oct. 3. St. Elizabeth farmers markets, which are in the main lobby on Park Avenue in Youngstown, will be the third Wednesday of the month on June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17.
