Remembering a special day
Remembering a special day
At McDonald’s Memorial Day observance, Mayor Holmes read information about the meaning of the folds in the American flag when it is given to a surviving family member. The Fire Department members placed flags into holders, around the monument, one for each citizen of the Village who gave his life in service to his country. This was done carefully and with dignity.
Information was read commemorating each person, giving his rank, serial number, how and where he died and the theater in which he died, if that was appropriate. That list was compiled by a former Fire Department officer, Jim Copham, prior to his death 18 years ago. He felt strongly that people needed to know the facts surrounding the death of the young service men and he worked tirelessly on the list. (Jim, was a veteran and a former prisoner of war in Germany.)
Every community should so honor their fallen members with such information and I am proud to live in a community that cares about the men who paid the price for liberty. Memorial Day is truly a special day.
Parents, make sure your children realize the significance of this day and if at all possible, get them to a Memorial Day service each year.

Bullets fly in Youngstown
I just got done watching the Hatfields and McCoys, when gunfire broke out on the street near my home on the Southside of Youngstown.
I thought of the similarities. When will it stop?
