Most in NYC object to large-soda ban
NEW YORK
About half of New Yorkers say Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposed ban of sugary drinks over 16 ounces from the city’s eateries is an example of government going too far, while 42 percent say it would be good health policy, according to a poll released Monday.
Of the 500 adults surveyed Sunday for the NY1-Marist poll, 53 percent said the proposal is a bad idea, while 42 percent praised the concept — which would make New York the first American city to so directly attempt to limit portion sizes in an attempt to fight obesity.
Official: Drone aims at al-Qaida’s No. 2
WASHINGTON
A CIA drone strike Monday targeted al-Qaida’s second in command, Abu Yahia al-Libi, in Pakistan, but it was unclear whether he was among those hit, U.S. officials said. U.S. officials say fewer than five people were hit, although Pakistani officials say more than a dozen people were killed in two days of strikes in Pakistan. The CIA has carried out a half-dozen strikes in less than two weeks, as the U.S. pushes ahead with the controversial drone program despite Pakistani demands that it stop. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the classified drone program.
Warning preceded cannibal attack
BALTIMORE
A Maryland college student accused of killing a housemate and eating his heart and part of his brain was kicked out of an ROTC program after he punched holes in the walls of the cadet computer lab, and a military instructor referred to him as a “Virginia Tech waiting to happen,” according to a campus police report months before the attack. Alex Kinyua, 21, a native of Kenya and a student at Morgan State University, admitted using a knife to kill and carve up 37-year-old Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie before eating his organs, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office said last week. The older man, a native of Ghana, had been staying with the Kinyua family for about six weeks at their townhouse in the Baltimore suburb of Joppatowne. Investigators haven’t given a possible motive.
Search continues for dead in Nigeria
LAGOS, Nigeria
Emergency crews wearing masks to protect them from the acrid smoke and the stench of the dead searched for bodies in a smoldering, shattered neighborhood near the Lagos airport Monday after the crash of an airliner killed all 153 people on board and an unknown number on the ground. Apartment buildings, small businesses and roadside shops were smashed to bricks and rubble Sunday when the Dana Air MD-83 plowed into the area about five miles short of Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
Zimmerman lawyer: Client was fearful
ORLANDO, Fla.
The former neighborhood-watch leader charged with fatally shooting Trayvon Martin was confused and fearful when he and his wife misled court officials about their finances during an April bond hearing that allowed him to be released from jail, his attorney said Monday.
Attorney Mark O’Mara wrote on a website run by George Zimmerman’s legal team that he will ask for another bond hearing. A day earlier, Zimmerman returned to jail because his $150,000 bond was revoked by a Florida judge after prosecutors claimed Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, deceived the court during the bond hearing.
At the hearing, Shellie Zimmerman testified that the couple had limited funds for bail. Prosecutors say Zimmerman actually had raised $135,000 in donations from a website he created.
