Last-chance-of-your-lifetime event is Tuesday

CANFIELD

Early Tuesday evening will be the last chance of your lifetime to see a celestial phenomenon, known as the Transit of Venus.

The passage of the planet, Venus, across the face of the sun begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and public sessions for safe viewing of the event will be at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm in Canfield and outside the Ted Pedas Planetarium at Farrell, Pa., High School.

The local view of the 6-hour and 40-miniute passage will be cut off at sundown and is contingent on the sun’s not being obscured by clouds. Venus will appear as a tiny dot crossing the sun as it passes directly between the earth and the sun. The next Transit of Venus will be in the year 2117.

Youngstown State University’s Ward-Beecher Planetarium staff and members of the Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society will have filtered telescopes set up at the Canfield location.
