Struthers man dies in crash near Sandusky

OAK HARBOR

Ricky Jackson, 52, of Struthers died in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on state Route 2 here, just west of Sandusky in Ottawa County, which also killed the driver of the other vehicle.

Jackson was driving a semi tractor-trailer hauling a steel coil, and Michael B. Aten, 60, of Vermilion, was driving a Ford Escape, according to the Sandusky Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The post said Aten was traveling westbound and crossed the center line into the eastbound lane, where Jackson was traveling eastbound. The vehicles collided in the eastbound lane at 12:44 p.m.

Aten’s vehicle spun off the north side of the road and came to rest on the berm. Jackson’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and came to rest in a ditch, troopers said.

The coil broke loose from its bindings and struck the passenger compartment of the semi, troopers said. The steel coil came to rest in the ditch.

It is not known whether Jackson was wearing a seat belt, and it is not known whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident, the patrol said. The crash remains under investigation.
