49 pounds of pot seized in Boardman

Township police found 69 marijuana plants growing, more than 115 root balls of previously harvested marijuana and several harvested marijuana plants when executing a search warrant at 1082 Shields Road.

The resident, Matthew F. Delsignore, was charged Wednesday with cultivating marijuana in the vicinity of a juvenile, trafficking marijuana in the vicinity of a juvenile and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said there are neighbors with children.

Police also found three guns under a mattress and more than $9,000 cash, according to reports. Police have filed a seizure form asking the court to forfeit: a 2006 Honda Civic, Echo Bearcat chipper, 37-inch TV, video game systems, $11,468 cash, $2,170 in money orders and 60 silver coins.

The weight of the harvested, unharvested and packaged marijuana totaled 49 pounds, reports state.

Delsignore pleaded innocent Thursday to possession of drug paraphernalia and did not enter a plea on the two felony counts.

Biking for a cause

Chuck Campbell of Poland should reach his Florida destination today after bicycling 1,070 miles in memory of his late wife, Carol Campbell.

Campbell, 62, began his journey May 2 and will finish in Pensacola, Fla., where his daughter lives.

Carol Campbell, Chuck’s wife of 36 years and longtime Struthers teacher, died in 2008 at age 58 from staphylococcal meningitis, a rare but deadly type of meningitis and used Hospice of the Valley during her final days.

As part of his ride, Campbell asked people to sponsor him by making a donation to Hospice of the Valley.

Urban farming forum set Tuesday at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University will host an urban agriculture roundtable at the annual Sustainable Energy Forum, 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

The event will be moderated by Walker Wells, director of Global Green USA, an environmental advocacy group founded by former Soviet Union head of state Mikhail Gorbachev.

“The goal is for information shared during the program to result in greater collaboration and advancement of urban agriculture in the region,” Wells said.

Global Green has been working with the city of Youngstown since 2009, studying aspects of the environmental landscape such as a greenhouse-gas inventory. The group will release a report that studied potential benefits of urban agriculture on Youngstown’s economy and ecology.

A 23-year-old Warren woman reported that three gunshots were fired at the car she was driving on Oak Street Southwest near Quinby Park at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The woman said she passed a burgundy sport-utility vehicle from which a black male in his 20s or 30s fired shots out the window, striking her car.

The woman had two passengers in her car, one of whom had just bonded out of jail, she said. The woman suffered a small cut on her leg as a result of flying glass, she said.
