Christian Freeboro, Boardman Shepherd of the Valley Dietician, surprised himself and his fellow employees and residents when he won first place at the facilities’ spaghetti eating contest May 17.
“I’m surprised with myself. I didn’t think that I could do it,” Freeboro said.
The event culminated a series of week-long activities in celebration of National Nursing Home Week.
“We always have a food eating contest and residents enjoy it,” said Christina Restle, administrator at Shepherd of the Valley.
A crowd of residents watched in awe as Freeboro, who is normally a healthy eater, dove head-first into a bowl full of spaghetti.
Freeboro won a basket filled with Italian herbs and spices, but was more excited about winning bragging rights.
“It feels good and there’s a sense of pride,” Freeboro said. “I had some reservations about it, but it was OK and I enjoyed myself,” Freeboro said.
Boardman Shepherd of the Valley employee Teresa Williams won second place and A.J. Barrett was third.
According to Restle, the event is not only entertaining for residents, but also increases the camaraderie amongst employees.
“We’ll probably be talking about this for the rest of the week,” Restle said.
