Poland Middle School’s eighth-grade students with a cumulative grade point average of a 3.5 or better were honored for their academic prowess during the school’s 39th annual Honors Banquet May 17.
PTO President Barbara Hierro said the event is similar to a graduation ceremony for students.
“It’s to a degree like a graduation for them from the eighth grade before they go to high school,” Hierro said.
Students who were able to maintain a 3.5 or better for the first three quarters were awarded by the PTO with certificates and pendants for their scholastic achievements.
“We honor the students who are already setting a stage for their high school and college careers,” Hierro said.
The banquet included 92 students dressed in their best attire for the occasion, which was also special for students, according to Heirro.
“They love being able to get dressed up and being rewarded,” Heirro said.
Abigail Lea was proud of herself for achieving such a high academic standard.
“I feel accomplished,” Lea said.
Poland superintendent Robert Zorn was also in attendance as a speaker and offered some words of wisdom to his young audience.
“You will never stop learning,” Zorn said.
Although the banquet was for students, parents couldn’t help but be just as excited. Lorie Moncilovitch, whose son, Ethan, was awarded was proud of her son.
“I’m very proud a lot of hard work went into this,“ Moncilovitch said.
