The thumps of bongos and the sound of snapping fingers echoed through the hallways of Lynn Kirk Elementary School during the school’s poetry cafe May 22.
Third-grade students at Lynn Kirk recited their own words of rhyme for their parents and teachers.
“The kids learn how to write about 15 different styles of poetry. After they finish writing their 15 poems, they get a chance to choose one of their poems. Or they can write their own unique poem of any style that we learned, publish that, and put it into our classroom book of poetry and present them one by one at the poetry cafe,” said third-grade teacher Ashley Wallace. Students learned a variety of writing styles used in poetry, including non-rhyming Japanese poetry.
“They learn how to count out syllables instead of making rhyme and it’s a great transition for them because kindergarten through second grade they’re so use to all the poems rhyming,” Wallace said.
Parents were thrilled to be a part of the cafe and appreciated their childrens’ efforts.
“It was really nice and they worked so hard,” said Kelly Burich.
Students also enjoyed reading their poetry in front of everyone.
“I felt excited,” Kaitlin Burick said.
“It’s so good to see how far they’ve come,” said Wallace.
