Introduction to photography set

Ever wanted to know what all of those letters and numbers on your camera are and how they can make your photographic life easier? Learn how simple photographic strategies can give you more control and expand your creativity on June 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and June 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. Mill Creek MetroParks has partnered with YM Camera to offer this small hands-on class as the first part of a summer photography series. Registration and payment are due 36 hours prior to program. Birding the sanctuary

Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead this walk on June 16 at 8 a.m. The walk will be at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, a 264-acre park district property closed to the public. Call Ford Nature Center by June 15 for reservations. Upon registration you will receive additional details. No walk-ins will be permitted.

Passport to fishing set

This program provides fishing skills, techniques and information for beginning anglers to start fishing in their own communities. Come join us on June 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for this fun and educational experience. Fishing equipment will be provided. For ages 17 and under. Lunch will be provided for a fee of $5. MetroMutts Hike to be June 30

The MetroParks will host MetroMutts hike on June 30 at 10 a.m. Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ford Nature Center with your favorite canine companion as we hike the All People’s Trail and explore the center’s grounds. Enjoy cake and refreshments afterwards. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Easy rating.

Hear tales for twos

Two-year-olds will learn about the creatures that carry their houses on their backs on June 7 at 10 and 10:45 a.m. Preregister 24 hours in advance at Ford Nature Center. Held at Birch Hill Cabin. The cost is $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents.

Preschoolers ages 3-5 are invited outdoors for a story and hike along Mill Creek on June 8 at 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. or June 9 at 10 a.m. You’ll look for fossils, learn about Ohio’s state fossiland create your own fossil. Meet at the Suspension Bridge parking lot. Preregister 24 hours in advance at Ford Nature Center. No strollers, please. Cost is $2 for residents and $3 nonresidents.

Family Garden Fun set

Plan a drop-in visit to the Family Garden on fair weather Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays throughout June to dig, water, pot a plant to take home or read a book.

The programs will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m.

The Family Garden Greeter will tell you about the plants and has free hands-on activities for children to enjoy with their favorite adults. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for more information.

Play strawberry hide and seek

Children ages 3-5 years will discover strawberry plants hiding throughout the Family Garden on June 21 from 1 to 2 p.m. or June 23 from 11 a.m. to noon. The children will also decorate a pot for their special plant to grow in all summer. Snack and story will be enjoyed along with the activity. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

In The Time of Dinosaurs set

Fellows Riverside Garden will host In the Time of Dinosaurs on June 23 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. What kinds of plants are growing in the Family Garden that might have been growing in the time of the dinosaurs? Each child age 6 and up will learn about prehistoric plants and be given a ginkgo tree to take home. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The cost is $10 for residents and $14 for non-residents.

Take yoga at the gardens

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m. throughout June. A blend of energizing yoga styles will help you keep a healthy outlook. Students at all levels are welcome. Bring a mat. Classes are outdoors, weather permitting. Meet at the information desk. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for information. The cost is $10 per class.

Partake in T’ai Chi

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host T’ai Chi Step One on June 6, 13, 20 and 27 from noon to 1 p.m. Ease stress, improve health and increase vitality. Join Marie Lew in warm-ups, breathing exercises and selected movements from a classic Chen T’ai Chi form. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for information. The cost is $10 per class.

Meditation in movement set

Join Julie Thomas in the Tara Dance on June 24 from noon to 2 p.m. Through simple, graceful movements you learn to focus on inner strengths and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding gardens. Meet in the Gazebo. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for information. The cost is $10.

Make ice cream at the farm

The MetroParks Farm invites you to make ice cream in a bag and watch a Moo to You video on June 9 and 23 at 11 a.m. The cost is $2 for residents and $3 for nonresidents.

Family tours set

Join us for a guided tour of the Farm on a tractor-wagon ride and enjoy a visit with the animals on June 14, 21 and 28 at 10 a.m. Playroom and Gift Shop will be open. The tour is 60-75 minutes, so pack a lunch for a picnic. Reservations are suggested; space is limited.

Cook with whole grains

Three local chefs will demonstrate how to cook breakfast items with whole grains that are ground at Lanterman’s Mill on June 9 from 8 to 11 a.m. Enjoy samplings and take the recipes home. Call the Mill to register. Class is limited. The cost is $15.

Learn to cook

Chef David Armstrong will prepare your next summer favorites on June 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Armstrong will prepare a fresh watermelon Greek salad served in a martini glass, grilled swordfish steak skewers with a lemon parsley sauce, grilled sausage with caramelized onions and grapes. Ikebana Flower Show set

The Ikebana Flower Show will be today from noon to 5 p.m. and June 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The beauty and gracefulness of Japanese flower arrangements are presented in modern as well as traditional environments.

The Mahoning Valley Rose Society Show will be June 23 from noon to 5 p.m. and June 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entries from novice and experienced growers will highlight this American Rose Society affiliated show.

Boardman native earns scholarship at Miami (Ohio)

Boardman native John H. Watkins, a senior chemical engineering-paper science major, at Miami University, received one of four Williams Leadership Scholarships in the amount of $24,000 at the annual Student Recognition Dinner this spring at the Shriver Center on Miami’s Oxford campus.

Watkins was selected for this prestigious scholarship based on superior academic ability and demonstrated creativity and leadership skills.

More than 40 students from the Paper Engineering program received recognition for merit-based scholarships received during the 2011-12 academic year. More than $250,000 in total scholarships from the Paper Science Foundation were awarded during the year.

Wearing your bike helmet could get you free ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.

During June, July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.

The Boardman library will host Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books for babies 6-23 months on June 7 at 10 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Boardman library invites children of all ages to search for hidden treasure buried in the sand. Find the treasure and receive a hand stamp or a stick. During library hours through summer.

The Boardman library will host Family Story Time on June 26 at 10 a.m. Children of all ages are invited to join in on the stories and fun. Parents are also invited to join their children in this 30-minute program.

Stamping Stampede set

The Boardman library will be hosting Stamping Stampede for children ages 4-6 on June 14 at 2 p.m. Make a gift for you and your dad just in time for Father’s Day. The program will last one hour.

TAB meeting set

The Boardman library will host it’s monthly TAB (Teen Advisor Board) meeting on June 6 at 6:30 p.m. TAB meets the first Wednesday of every month at the Boardman library and is for teens grade 7-12. Newcomers are always welcome.

Cardinal Mooney student awarded scholarship

Cardinal Mooney senior Steve Perry, was awarded a $750 scholarship recently at the Boardman Civic Association’s annual banquet. Steve is the son of Brian and Michele Perry of Boardman.

Wound Care center relocates

The St. Elizabeth Boardman Wound Care Center has moved to 7010 South Ave., Suite 6 in Boardman. The new office, at the corner of South Avenue and Trailwood Drive, opened this morning and is convenient to Route 224 and Interstate 680, providing easier access for patients than its former DeBartolo Place office.

St. Elizabeth Wound Care Center specializes in providing comprehensive care for chronic, non-healing wounds using the latest treatments and technologies. Treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique needs and requirements, and complements the care provided by the patient’s primary care physician.

The staff consists of physicians who specialize in the treatment of chronic wounds, nurses specially trained to care for patients with these wounds, and experienced technicians.

Italian Fest to be in August

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest will be held on Aug. 3-5 in downtown Youngstown. The festival is now accepting applications for the Italian Man and Woman of the Year.
