Hilltop Elementary School hosted its annual Career Day May 4 as a fun way to introduce students to a variety of careers that are available for them.

Eighteen professionals volunteered to share the details of their careers with the students. The exhibitors were mostly parents, but members of the community, including the Canfield Fire Department, also participated.

Exhibitors included an auctioneer and realtor, a marketing specialist, an electrical contractor, a director of human resources, an endocrinologist, a family practitioner, a YSU biochemist, a kitchen designer, a baker, a general surgeon, an accountant, a graphic artist, a dietician, a mortgage loan specialist, pacemaker sales, an optometrist, a credit analyst and a Division of Wildlife fish management unit leader.

The day was organized by Diane Dankovich, guidance counselor at Hilltop Elementary and C.H. Campbell Elementary.

“The purpose of Career Day is to expose the students to the idea that there are hundreds of careers to choose from. They don’t have to think they can just be a football player or a doctor or a veterinarian or an astronaut. Some of the careers the children will end up pursuing have not even been invented yet,” Dankovich said.

Most of the displays were interactive and many exhibitors brought items to help them explain more clearly what their job entails, along with some souvenirs for the children.

For example, Dr. Phyllis DeRosa listened to the students’ hearts with a stethoscope and Sue Runion, assistant bakery manager at Struthers Nemenz IGA, demonstrated how to decorate a cake and, to the delight of the students, passed out samples of icing.

Brian Governor, president of P&W Marketing, brought each student a Canfield Cardinals cinch bag, Frisbee and stress ball, while Tracey Ramun displayed her art for the students. YSU biochemist Li Sui brought scientific tools for the children to see.

“We do this at Hilltop because we love it. We are so thankful for the parents who volunteer their time and expertise. This is their opportunity to be able to see and enjoy the children of Hilltop like our staff gets to every day. We love to have parents in the building and we have wonderful volunteer parents here,” Dankovich said.

This is the 13th year Career Day has been held at Hilltop.
