Hilltop students celebrate Arbor Day

Fourth-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School celebrated Arbor Day by planting a Buckeye tree in front of the school. Fourth-grade students at Hilltop Elementary celebrated Arbor Day by planting the state tree, a Buckeye, in front of the school.
To help the students celebrate the planting, several guests were invited to an assembly. Guests included Mark Eddy, chairman of the Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board, Nancy Brundage, secretary of the board, and board members Nick Rosian, Bob Minkler and Diane Degnan. Also in attendance were Dante Zambrini, Canfield Local Schools superintendent, and Canfield City Council members Andrew Skrobola and John Morvay.
Eddy thanked the students for their involvement.
“Thank you for getting involved and celebrating Arbor Day. Soon there will be buckeyes on your tree out there. Ohio has more Tree Cities than any other state in the U.S.,” Eddy said.
Skrobola read a proclamation honoring Hilltop Elementary School’s fourth-grade class for recognizing Arbor Day and stating that the school has helped the City of Canfield earn its 31st Tree City USA certification. The proclamation, signed by Canfield Mayor Bill Kay, declared May 7 as Tree City Arbor Day.
Zambrini also addressed the students.
According to Eddy, the Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board planted nine trees this spring.
“We added five trees in the parks, three on the green, and, of course, the one here at Hilltop. Without the Tree City designation, we wouldn’t have the beautiful village green to celebrate such wonderful events as the Fourth of July,” Eddy said.
The students entertained their special guests by singing “Ohio is my Home,” and to close the program, the students sang Ohio’s state song, “Beautiful Ohio.”
