Mooney's McCarthy out for year with knee injury

Chiefs safety Kyle McCarthy will miss the 2012 NFL season with a knee injury.

McCarthy, a Cardinal Mooney graduate, injured his knee in training camp on Saturday.

"Unfortunately I suffered a setback the other day in training camp that will sideline me this year," McCarthy said in a Facebook post. "This has been extremely disappointing and frustrating. All I can do is work hard and give everything I have to get back. Thank you for the support!"

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said McCarthy will need surgery. He was "waived injured," meaning the team will pay his salary until his injured has healed and that he will be placed on injured reserve once he clears waivers, allowing Kansas City to replace him on the roster.

When reached Tuesday, McCarthy declined comment, saying he wasn't sure how much he was allowed to say about the injury yet.
