Liberty police seek bank-robbery suspect

Township police are still searching for a suspect in a robbery at a local bank.

According to police reports, a man walked into Huntington Bank inside Giant Eagle, 4700 Belmont Ave., about 4:45 p.m. Friday.

He approached the counter and told the teller, “This is a robbery.”

The suspect asked the teller for “the $100s, $50s and $20s,” before he pulled up his shirt and showed a black pistol tucked into his waistband, said police.

After showing the gun, the report states the suspect said, “What’s taking you so long? I’m a gangster. It’s not your money; it’s the FDIC’s,” he said, referring to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Police said the bank teller hit the silent alarm during the robbery, before the suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash.

Witnesses told police he walked out the main entrance at 4:53 p.m.

Along with township police, members of the FBI, the Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation were all on the scene after the incident.

Police said it appears the suspect has a “large sleeve-type” tattoo on the top of his left forearm.

Police are reviewing video footage from Giant Eagle and Huntington Bank.
