Chrysler posts $436 million profit

DETROIT

Chrysler’s almost total reliance on North America used to be a huge weakness, one that sent the company into bankruptcy protection.

Now it’s a major strength. The region is generating profits for the company while losses in Europe and slowing sales in South America and China are drains on other carmakers.

Chrysler, which sells almost 90 percent of its cars and trucks in the U.S. and Canada, made a $436 million profit in the second quarter. It was a huge turnaround from a year earlier, when the company lost $370 million, mainly because it refinanced government-bailout loans.

The automaker, now majority owned by Italy’s Fiat SpA, also backed an earlier profit forecast of about $1.5 billion for the year.

US to impose tariffs on imported washers

WASHINGTON

The U.S. Commerce Department has granted a request from Whirlpool Inc. to impose tariffs on washing machines imported from South Korea and Mexico.

The department said Monday that Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. imported machines from Korea and Mexico at prices below fair market value, a practice known as dumping. Dumping is illegal under U.S. trade law, and companies can seek duties to counteract it.

The department also says it will impose duties on washing machines from South Korea made by Daewoo Electronics Corp. and from Mexico by Electrolux, which is based in Sweden.

The tariffs range from 9.6 percent to 72.4 percent.

Jury selection in Apple-Samsung trial

SAN JOSE, Calif.

A trial pitting Apple against Samsung kicked off Monday in federal court in San Jose, with jury selection in the closely watched patent-infringement case.

Prospective jurors were grilled through the morning about whether they had friends who worked at Apple or other tech companies; the brand of their cellphones and tablets; and what books they had read concerning Apple and/or Samsung.

The selection process took place in U.S. District Judge Lucy H. Koh’s courtroom on the fifth floor of the courthouse, with dozens of prospective jurors sitting in several rows of seats usually used by spectators.
