1918: Poet Joyce Kilmer, best remembered for his poem “Trees,”is killed during the Second Battle of the Marne in World War I. He was a sergeant in the 165th U.S. Infantry Regiment.

1932: The Summer Olympic Games open in Los Angeles.

1942: President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs a bill creating a women’s auxiliary agency in the Navy known as “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service” — WAVES for short.

1945: The Portland class heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis is torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during World War II; only 316 out of some 1,200 men survive.

1965: President Lyndon B. Johnson signs into law the Medicare bill, which goes into effect the following year.

1987: J. Philip Richley, a Cafaro Co. vice president, warns the city of Youngstown that a short delay in removing asbestos from the site of the New Avanti Motor Corp. will not imperil the project, but that days should not be allowed to turn into weeks.

1972: Dr. Margaret A. Braden is named chairman of the elementary education department at Yougnstown State University.

1962:John Maruski, 15, is beaten over the head and shot in the leg by a robber who forced his way into the family home at 7901 Market St. The robber escaped with $1,200.

A 25-year-old South Side man is captured by traffic patrolmen after his car overturned on a steep downward hill near Darlington, Pa. He was fleeing Patrolman John Rinko to avoid arrest as a probation violator.

1937: A $1 million airport a mile north of Vienna Center that would serve Mahoning, Trumbull and Mercer counties gets an endorsement from the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce and a variety of community leaders during a meeting called by the chamber.

Anxiety is rising for Samuel Marable Dean, Youngstown area Presbyterian missionary, his wife and adopted Chinese daughter, who were due to sail for American July 17 from the war zone in China. The State Department says it has no way of knowing where the Dean family is.
