On Sept. 22, teams can help those with Alzheimer’s

WARREN

The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater East Ohio Chapter is signing up teams to participate in its Walk to End Alzheimer’s scheduled for Sept. 22.

The walk will take place in Perkins Park, 321 Mahoning Ave. NW, which is a change from last year’s location.

Check-in is at 8:30 a.m., and the opening ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Each walker will join in a ceremony to pay tribute to those affected or who have been affected by Alzheimer’s.

There is no cost to sign up, but the walk offers opportunities for teams and individuals to raise funds through pledges, asking for donations from family members co-workers and friends or third-party special events such as garage sales, pasta dinners or bake sales.

Those who want to participate should contact Helen Paes, development coordinator, at 330-533-3300 or email her at hpaes@alz.org. Teams may also register online by visiting www.alz.org/walk.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Association care, support and research programs.

The organization encourages all sectors of the community to get involved, including those in heath care, business, civic and service groups, professional organizations, churches, and caregivers and family members of those who are afflicted.

Alzheimer’s is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth leading cause of death.

As baby boomers age, the number of those with Alzheimer’s will rapidly escalate, increasing beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s.

There is no treatment to stop or slow Alzheimer’s, but efforts to raise funds and awareness help to advance research toward a cure as well as help to provide local support services for families.

The Great East Ohio Chapter provides education, guidance, referral information and support for the 60,000 people with Alzheimer’s and the 250,000 caregivers in the service area.
