Polish sea resort giving sand away for free

WARSAW, Poland

Too busy for a vacation, but long for a beach? Try Poland, where you can take home as much Baltic Sea sand as you want for free.

Authorities say the pure, light sand in the town of Leba in the country’s north is up for grabs to everyone — from toddlers to construction companies — after moving dunes in the Slowinski National Park started to clog up the beach and local waterways.

Leba tourism official Pawel Dabrowski said Thursday that the sand is getting into a canal leading into the town’s picturesque port and constantly needs to be dredged out at high cost.

He says the sand is free, except for an 82-zloty ($24) administrative fee for trucks.

Police in western Pennsylvania say they’re seeking tips about a stolen fire hydrant.

The hydrant vanished between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning in Laughlintown, which is about 55 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.

Authorities say someone entered a construction site and took the fire hydrant, which is valued at about $1,200.

Police: Pa. man stalked woman he believed was ex

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

A western Pennsylvania man is jailed on charges he has harassed and stalked a woman, apparently under the mistaken belief that he was once married to and fathered children with her.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for 45-year-old Robert Allen Young, of New Brighton, who remained in the Lawrence County Jail on Thursday.

The Beaver County Times reports state police have charged him with felony stalking and other crimes for contact he reportedly has had with the woman and her real husband since December 2010.

The woman’s husband tells police he used to be friends with Young but that Young was never married to the woman, nor does he have children with her.

Police say Young reportedly left cards and gifts on the couple’s porch for the woman and the imaginary children July 19.
