Neighbors | Submitted.Dr. James Chengelis is a long-time supporter of the Boardman community. He donated three unique species of maple trees to Boardman Park. He is shown here planting one of the beautiful trees.
Thanks to Dr. James Chengelis, three large maple trees are now part of the landscape at Boardman Park. “Brandywine,” “October Glory,” and “Green Mountain” were planted in memory of his parents, Theodore P. Chengelis and Evelyn H. Chengelis, and his sister, Patricia F. Chengelis.
“Brandywine” has a red-purple autumn color. It produces deep red leaves and gradually turns to a brilliant purple red fall color. The “October Glory” tends to hold its dark green leaves late into fall, but the vibrant orange to red fall color is worth the wait. The “Green Mountain” carries all of the characteristics of the Sugar Maple with the strong limbs and the gorgeous fall color.
“My parents absolutely had the highest value for education, reading and the environment. They loved trees and always planted them. They would give a tree to a friend for their birthday or anniversary, thus, the environment would benefit and that person would have an everlasting gift.” Chengelis said.
