Hilltop Elementary School kindergartners in Lisa Zetts’ class got a lesson in agriculture right outside their classroom doors.

The students planted their very own vegetable garden behind the school in their playground area at the end of April. The students planted several vegetables including, lettuce, carrots, peppers and radishes.

The students took good care of their garden and watched the vegetables grow throughout the spring. Once the vegetables were ready to harvest, the students cut the lettuce and pulled the vegetables and celebrated the cultivation by making salads for themselves. Each student was asked to bring in their favorite salad dressing and any other toppings they like on their salads.

The students also planted special bean plants that could grow up a metal tee pee, with the intent of looking forward to coming back to visit the garden this fall as first-graders.
