Poland Church of the Rock turned its sanctuary into an ancient Egyptian paradise during Vacation Bible School July 16-20. From the replica sand-colored pyramids to the large Egyptian crowned figure mounted above, campers received an authentic experience.
“We are learning the Egyptian file and we’ve got different things that we do. We do Bible lessons, crafts and play games,” said VBS Director Linda Penney.
Initially, some participants were shy, but eventually gained a new appreciation of Egyptian history all the while having fun with their friends and camp counselors.
“Some kids are timid at the beginning. The music director has done a great job at getting the kids involved. Music just brings something out in the kids,” Penney said.
Along with Egyptian history, participants also learned the value of helping others in need by raising money for Needles Eye Ministry Inc., for school supplies.
“The kids get excited. They’ve done a great job. It’s a matter of serving others and it makes you appreciate what you have and opens kids’ eyes to see that they are blessed,” said Co-Director Kari Brungard.
Children were not the only ones who gained a new understanding. Brungard gained a more appreciative attitude through her interaction with children at VBS.
“The one thing for me as a volunteer, at any level, you are impacted much more from the kids. I’m reminded at how blessed I am,” Brungard said.
Although the week was full of fun and interesting activities, volunteers hoped that children would walk away with a new-found understanding that they are loved by God.
“I hope kids get an understanding of who they are, and that God loves them,” Brungard said.
