Ohio man charged with hitting officer, bystander with his SUV

COLUMBUS (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a motorist who allegedly was under the influence when he ran into a police officer and a bystander on a Columbus interstate highway ramp earlier this month.

The indictment filed today charges 41-year-old Alphonso Jennings III with six counts, including aggravated vehicular assault and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Columbus police said the officer, Sgt. Steve Livingston, was stopped helping a woman whose car had spun out of control on Interstate 71 near Interstate 270 on July 15. Prosecutors say Jennings driving the SUV that struck the two.

Both were seriously injured but expected to recover.

Jennings was being booked into the jail this afternoon.
