Valerio’s homer leads M.V. over ’Cutters

WILLIAMSPORT, PA.

Charlie Valerio hit his fourth home run of the season lifting the Mahoning Valley Scrappers over the Williamsport Crosscutters, 3-1.

Hunter Jones got the Scrappers on the board first. With two outs in the top of the second inning, Jones hit a blooper down the right field line. It landed just out of the reach of right fielder Yan Carlos Olmo allowing Jeremy Lucas to score from second.

One inning later, Tyler Naquin smacked a one-out double. With two outs, Valerio crushed the first pitch he saw deep into over the left field for a 3-1 lead.

Ryan Merritt got the start and worked five strong innings. He scattered six hits. He allowed one run while walking one and striking out one.

Cody Penny worked the final two innings to earn his first professional save.

The Scrappers (18-17) will go for three wins in a row tonight as they play in Williamsport for the final time this season.
