A township man will face two counts of felonious assault in the shooting of a pregnant woman and her unborn child.

The woman was shot Monday morning in her leg and abdomen at an apartment complex on Townsend Avenue, police said.

She was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Health Center, where Jaimeela Lynn Montgomery and her unborn child were expected to make a full recovery, police said Monday afternoon.

At 5:43 a.m. police responded to a call at the 1400 block of Townsend Avenue and found a man holding a 21-year-old female at the top of the building’s third-floor steps.

According to reports, the victim had blood stains on her clothes, and was being attended to by her boyfriend.

After searching the apartment, police said they found four .45-caliber shell casings on a dining-room floor.

The victim’s boyfriend then told police the shooter was his brother, Tadarrell D. Mason, 19, of Townsend Avenue.

Shortly after the shooting, Mason arrived at the Liberty Township Police department and began banging on the doors, said Chief Richard J. Tisone. When police went to arrest Mason, he ran east toward Logan Way along state Route 304, said Tisone.

About 6 a.m., an off-duty Hubbard Township police officer was in the area and heard the call over the radio, said Tisone.

The officer saw Mason jogging along state Route 304 and advised Liberty police of Mason’s location.

After his arrest at a nearby cemetery, Mason said, “I just killed somebody,” according to police.

After being taken into custody, Mason began exhibiting “erratic” behavior and had to be restrained by officers, said Tisone.

He said Mason was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center for observation.

Tisone said after Mason is released from the hospital he will face two counts of felonious assault for shooting a woman and her unborn child.
