Kiwanis awards scholarships, plans district convention
Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club recently awarded three $500 scholarships to area graduates.
Recipients were Brian Wolfe of Jackson Milton High School, Jessica Tseng of Canfield High School and Samantha Srock of Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.
In other news, two members have been inducted into the club, Katelyn Amendolara, a teacher at Jackson Milton High School, and her mother, Christine Amendolara.
Delegates have been chosen to represent the club at the Ohio District of Kiwanis 95th annual convention, to take place in Boardman. These voting delegates are Robert Little, Robert Thomas and Wally Sinn.
Barbara Smith, another member of the club, is running for governor-elect of Ohio Kiwanis. If elected she would serve as governor-elect from Oct. 1 to Sept. 31, 2013, and then as governor from Oct. 1, 2013, to Sept. 31, 2014. She is being contested by Jennifer DeFrance of Ravenna.
The convention will take place Aug. 10-12 at the Holiday Inn, with the Saturday luncheon and delegate session to take place at The Georgetown, both in Boardman. This is the first time for the convention to occur in the Youngstown-Warren area. Smith is serving as convention chair.
Once again the club will work a stop for the annual Fred Perry Poker Run Aug. 19.
Plans also are being made for the club’s annual Cow Patty Bingo, which takes place in September. Tickets will go on sale soon.
