Dress For Success

Dress For Success

A ceremony will take place at noon Aug. 1 at 418 Main Ave. SW, Warren, for two organizations that help people at the lower end of the economic spectrum.

Diamonds in the Rough mentors females from middle school to adult. The organization’s website says it is “a direct response to the growing number of young females that are falling through the cracks at school, unwed mothers, drug addicted, high-school dropouts, or are already entangled within the juvenile justice system and/or the adult probation system.”

The mission for Dress For Success Warren/Youngstown is to promote the economic and social status of low-income women through career development, job retention and the promotion of self-sufficiency. The ceremony will include speakers, children’s activities, a ribbon-cutting and introduction of staff.

Bridge closed

The historic Newton Falls Covered Bridge is closed for repairs after an accident involving a truck that tried to drive through.

The truck apparently was being driven by someone unfamiliar with the area, and it damaged a scissor truss at the top of the bridge recently, said Don Barzak, spokesman for the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office.

The bridge has been closed since the accident and most likely will remain closed until the truss is repaired, Barzak said.

The damage was less serious than what took place in July 2009, when a driver from Canton drove completely through the structure, damaging trusses from one end to the other. Repairs that time cost $21,070.

Signs tell motorists that trucks are not permitted on the bridge.

Blood drive

Ivy Woods Manor, 9625 Market St., North Lima, is having a blood drive for the American Red Cross from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Tuesday. The facility has challenged its staff to provide 20 units of blood and is challenging community members to match that commitment. To schedule an appointment, call Katie Rusu, Ivy Woods marketing director, at 330-397-5950 or The American Red Cross at 800-RED-CROSS. All donors and volunteers will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gas card.
