Lee’s strong start helps M.V. salvage split in Jamestown

Staff report

Jamestown, N.y.

Jacob Lee pitched five innings of no-hit ball to earn his fourth victory of the season and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers edged Jamestown 2-1 in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader to salvage a split in New York-Penn League action.

The Scrappers lost the opener 9-7.

Lee (4-0) struck out five and did not allow a walk for the Scrappers (16-16), who are 7-9 on the road.

Cody Penny pitched a shutout inning of relief and Rafael Homblert gave up a run in the seventh to earn the save in a shortened game.

Juan Romero provided all the offense Mahoning Valley needed, homering to left in the second inning to score Mitch Nilsson. Jairo Kelly and Nilsson had the Scrappers’ other hits.

The opening game was a continuation of Thursday’s contest, which was suspended by rain after three innings with the Scrappers leading 6-3.

Jamestown (15-16) scored six runs in the eighth inning, three each off relievers Nicholas Pasquale and Jack Wagoner (1-3), who got the loss.

Evan Frazar went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBIs — all coming on Thursday.

Joseph Wendle had three hits, including two doubles, to go with two runs and an RBI. Richard Stock and Robel Garcia each added two singles and a run.

The Scrappers will host Jamestown the next two nights at Eastwood Field. They then play two straight at Williamsport before starting a six-game homestand.
